Hi, I’m Tam.
I walked my first Camino on a whim — three weeks off work, a backpack I’d overpacked by at least 4kg, and absolutely no idea what I was getting myself into. That was the Camino Português, and by the time I reached the Praza do Obradoiro in Santiago, something had shifted. I’ve been walking — and writing about walking — ever since.
Since that first trip I’ve walked three Camino routes: the Português, the Francés, and the Norte. Each one different, each one unforgettable. The Português remains my favourite — the vinho verde helps — but I’ll defend the Norte’s wild coastline to anyone who’ll listen.
I started Buen Camino Guide because the information I needed when planning my first Camino was scattered, vague, or written by people who hadn’t actually walked it recently. This blog is my attempt to fix that — honest, practical, firsthand guides for pilgrims at every stage of planning, from “I’ve just heard of the Camino” to “I leave in two weeks.”
Everything on this site is based on real experience on the trail. When I recommend a piece of gear, I’ve used it. When I describe a stage, I’ve walked it. When I say the menú del peregrino in a certain town is worth stopping for — trust me on that one.
What you’ll find here:
- Complete route guides for every major Camino
- Honest packing lists and gear recommendations
- Real budget breakdowns and cost guides
- Training plans for first-timers
- Accommodation guides and albergue reviews
- The cultural and spiritual side of the pilgrimage
Whether you’re planning your first Camino or your fifth, I hope this guide helps you walk a little lighter — literally and figuratively.
Bom Caminho. 🌟
— Tam
